Plan B

What is Plan B?

Plan B refers to a type of emergency contraception, commonly known as the “morning-after pill.” It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if a contraceptive method fails (e.g., a condom breaks). The most common form of Plan B is a pill containing the hormone levonorgestrel, which is taken to prevent ovulation, block fertilization, or keep a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. Plan B is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, ideally within 24 hours, but it can still be effective up to 72 hours afterwards. It is not intended as a regular form of contraception but is used as a backup method. Importantly, it does not terminate an existing pregnancy and is distinct from abortion pills.

Is Plan B still legal in Texas?

Birth control and emergency contraceptives, such as Plan B or another morning-after pill that helps prevent pregnancy within 72 hours after unprotected sex, remain legal under Texas abortion laws. Plan B pills are categorized differently from medication abortion pills. Access and confidentiality vary based on the type of birth control, insurance and whether funding comes from the state or federal government.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Under the Affordable Care Act, most health insurance plans must provide
contraception options and family planning counseling at no out-of-pocket cost. This includes FDA-approved options prescribed by a doctor such as birth control pills, vaginal rings, implants like IUDs, barrier methods, sterilization procedures and emergency contraception like Plan B and Ella. The U.S. Supreme Court added in its decision to overrule Roe v. Wade that the constitutional right to access contraceptives remains.
