Actinic Keratosis

What is Actinic Keratosis (AK)?

Actinic Keratosis (AK) is a precancerous skin condition characterized by rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by long-term exposure to the sun. These lesions are most commonly found on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the face, lips, ears, back of the hands, forearms, scalp, and neck. AK presents a significant risk for the development of skin cancer, underscoring the importance of effective management strategies. At VPharmacy, our compounding pharmacist can tailor treatments to meet the specific needs of individuals with AK, considering factors like the lesion’s location, patient’s skin type, and tolerance to various treatments.

How can VPharmacy Compounding Help with Actinic Keratosis (AK)?

VPharmacy can tailor treatments to meet the specific needs of individuals with AK, considering factors like the lesion’s location, patient’s skin type, and tolerance to various treatments. Here’s how compounding pharmacies contribute to the management of AK. We offer customized formulations to include one or more active ingredients in concentrations that might not be available in commercially produced medications and allows for a high degree of customization in treating AK.

What are the Active Ingredients in VPharmacy’s Compounding Treatments for Actinic Keratosis?

DICLOFENAC SODIUM

A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in a gel form to treat AK by reducing inflammation. Diclofenac works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, leading to a decrease in the production of prostaglandins, which are compounds involved in the inflammation process. By reducing inflammation, diclofenac can help to slow down or prevent the progression of AK lesions

RETINOIDS- VITAMIN A DERIVATIVE

Vitamin A derivatives that can help in skin renewal and may reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.

TRETINOIN

A prescription-strength topical retinoid that has been studied for its effectiveness in treating AK. Tretinoin promotes the turnover of skin cells, helping to remove the rough, scaly patches characteristic of AK.

ADAPALENE

Though primarily used for acne, adapalene (a synthetic retinoid) has also shown potential in the treatment of AK due to its similar mechanism of promoting cell turnover and reducing inflammation.

TAZAROTENE

A third-generation synthetic retinoid with proven efficacy in treating plaque psoriasis, acne, and has also been used for AK treatment. It is believed to work by modulating gene expression involved in cell growth and differentiation.

NIACINAMIDE

can improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and enhance DNA repair in skin cells. While the exact mechanism by which niacinamide may affect AK lesions is not fully understood, its overall beneficial effects on skin health and its ability to reduce inflammation could theoretically contribute to the treatment of AK.
